Abstract

This study assesses the impact of forage quality and availability on deer body condition for a recovering population of Sitka black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sithensis) on Coronation Island. Wolves were introduced to Coronation in 1961 with a subsequent reduction in deer numbers. Since then, wolves have died out and deer numbers are rebounding. Comparisons are made with data from Klein’s 1959–1961 study when the population of deer was at a moderately high and sustained level in relation to food resources.
