Abstract

On Feb 20 the publisher of the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) fired editor-in-chief John Hoey and senior deputy editor Anne Marie Todkill. Since then most of the other editors and most of the journal’s editorial board have resigned and authors have withdrawn their submissions or expressed reluctance to submit to the journal. The Lancet has declared that it finds the firings “deeply troubling”. Meanwhile the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) has appointed a new acting editor issued editorial principles affirming the CMAJ’s editorial independence and outlining standard procedures for firing the editor and appointed former Canadian Chief Justice Antonio Lamer to chair a review of the journal’s governance (although unfortunately Lamer was forced to resign from the panel on May 3 due to ill-health).
