Abstract

Summary The occurrence of a number of sites of deeply weathered Whin Sill dolerite is reported. The most intensely altered section found to date is at Holwick Scars, Yorkshire, and consists of up to fifteen metres of an incoherent grus showing a zonation which reflects the original joint system of the rock. The alteration shows strong similarities to that produced by weathering of igneous rocks in tropical or sub-tropical climates. Weathering of this type occurred in Britain in late tertiary times.
