Abstract

No evidence of superadiabatic gradients between 0 and 50 meters above the bottom, as are occasionally reported in the literature, was found in a variety of deep water environments. Isothermal columns extending more than 1000 meters above the bottom were found in two deeps in the Panama basin. A very weak superadiabatic gradient may exist in Cedros deep about 400 meters above the bottom. Irregular thermal structure was found at basin rim heights over the Panama basin.
