Abstract
Techniques for the use of depth vibrators for in-situ treatment of weak foundation soils are discussed. Examples are given of deep vibratory compaction projects in a number of countries. The application of such techniques to ground improvement in Saudi Arabia is described. Here, the fine-to-medium sands contain a high concentration of salts so presenting a corrosion problem for construction steel and concrete. From a cost comparison of methods of improving the poor bearing capacity of the soils to depths of 6 M, in-situ vibro-compaction was selected in preference to raft foundation, piled foundation and soil exchange. Details are given of methods and equipment used in the vibro-compaction works. (TRRL)
