Abstract

Thromboembolism is the leading direct cause of maternal deaths (Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths, CEMD, 2001). Although there has been a reduction in the number of deaths from thromboembolic disease (TED), women seem to have little knowledge about the disease and the importance of recognising the symptoms and seeking medical aid. Midwives are in a prime position to inform women regarding this issue. This article explores the lack of client understanding of TED through a small personal audit of a community midwife's routine postnatal visits.
