Abstract

Background: Negative symptoms of schizophrenia(NSS) are resistant to current pharmacological interventions. Thirty percent of appropriately medicated schizophrenia patients are disabled due to negative symptoms(NS). Prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortical volumes are decreased in NSS. PET and SPECT studies demonstrate decreased metabolism in frontal and prefrontal areas, particularly the DLPFC, leading to the study of high frequency rTMS for NSS. Conflicting sham-controlled studies resulted in the 2019 rTMS evidence based treatment guidelines downgrading high frequency rTMS LDLPFC for NSS to a C, possibly efficacious.
