Abstract

The geological and geophysical study of the representative segment of the Alpine-Himalayan mobile belt—the Central zone of the Garhwal Himalaya—was conducted. The results of structural and geological studies in conjunction with the data on the deep structure obtained by geophysical methods, compared the speed of horizontal movements and the position of the hypocenters of seismic events, are presented. The successive decrease in the current rates of transverse compression is observed as we approach the maximum topographical heights of the geological and geophysical profile stretching across the Garhwal Himalaya. The large fault zones are shown, to which are related the foci of deep earthquakes.
