Abstract

In this paper, coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical(THMC) processes to be considered in deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive wastes and their characteristics are introduced. We also investigated and introduced the characteristics of an excavation disturbed or damaged zone(EDZ) since the coupled THMC processes may concentrate and play a significant role in EDZ, where irreversible mechanical deformation is induced, considering that a crystalline rock is dominant in our geologic conditions. Numerical approach can be more effective in dealing with various uncertainties in individual process and parameters as well as long time period so that the types and properties of coupled analysis to simulate coupled THMC processes were identified as well.
