Abstract

Gold nanofoams (GNFs) were synthesized through the reaction between a zinc plate and a solution of HAuCl4 in the choline chloride/ethylene glycol based deep eutectic solvent (DES) without the assistance of any templates, seeds, or additives. By changing the solvent and the reaction temperature, it was demonstrated that the significantly low conductivity and high viscosity of the DES medium contributed to the formation of the GNFs. Moreover, the catalytic activity of GNFs was tested. Due to the more catalyst active sites, the GNFs showed excellent catalytic efficiency in the cycle use for the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds.
