Abstract
This paper summarises the progress that is being made with the development of deep disposal of intermediate- and low-level radioactive wastes in the United Kingdom. Following an extensive site selection exercise, a comprehensive programme of geological and hydro geological characterisation has been carried out at Sellafield in North West England since 1989 to evaluate its suitability to host a deep repository. This pro gramme has in dicated that the site shows good promise but a substantial amount of further work is required. The next major step is a rock characterisation facility, for which preparatory work has already begun
