Abstract

Results of two deep reflection seismic lines crossing the northern and southern part of the Rhine Graben, which were recorded in 1988 by the French ecors and the German dekorp teams, indicate that the asymmetry of this rift persists to the base of the crust. The brittle/ductile transition zone approximately coincides with the top of the lower crust. Ductile shear zones appear to affect the crust/mantle boundary. Upper crustal extension by faulting accounts for a divergence of the graben flanks by 5–7 km, whereas the crustal configuration of the Rhine Graben suggest an extension value of some 17 km.
