Abstract

Hydrographic sections occupied in April 1985 provide new evidence about deep boundary currents off the east coast of Madagascar and in the Somali basin. Off Madagascar, near 23°S, the deep boundary current was quite similar to that reported by Warren (1974), the northward transport below 3100 dbar (3058 m) being slightly less: 3.6 Sv compared to 5.2 Sv. Sections crossing the continental slope in the Somali basin near 3°N and at 53°E, however, indicated anticlockwise geostrophic flow in the deep water close to the boundary, accompanied by higher salinities. This is the reverse of what was observed by Warren et al. (1966) in August 1964, when a band of low salinity deep water was inferred to be moving northwards and eastwards near the boundary.
