The Supervising Senior Manuscript Editor of the Press’s Journals Division, Betty has decided to retire, and this issue marks the last time I will be able to rely on Betty. She is at once highly intelligent, instinctively savvy, gently honest, and immensely resourceful. Betty brought the rigorous attention to detail and scholarly precision that mark her editing of other academic journals to her work on Schools. She saw instantly that our emphasis on the subjective experience of school life created a platform for more varied and informal kinds of writing. With great respect for the content of each essay, Betty insisted on clear syntax, accurate references, and scrupulous adherence to the journal’s style sheet.
