Abstract

Values in the literature for the mean daily excretion of taurine for normal adults range from 156–196 mg/24 h. The mean daily taurine excretion of seven women 4 weeks after childbirth was 7.4 mg; this was increased to 121 mg 6 months after delivery. Lactation did not have any effect on taurine excretion. The mean daily taurine excretion of four women on a progestin-estrogen regimen was 12.0 mg; administration of 40 mg of pyridoxine daily for 5 days did not affect the amount of taurine they excreted.
