Abstract

Early life stress (ELS) is associated with a higher risk of developing psychopathologies in adult life, such as bipolar disorder (BD). A previous study demonstrated that ELS induces a decrease in Na+K+ATPase. Also, decreases in Na+K+ATPase activity is one of the leading theories about BD pathophysiology. Even though the ELS and Na+K+ATPase seem to play a pivotal role in BD etiology and pathophysiology, the connection between both of them is still not clear. The present study aims to investigate the effects of ELS on Na+K+ATPase activity in erythrocytes from BD patients and healthy controls.
