Abstract

RATIONALE: Serum arginase levels have been shown to be elevated in atopic conditions like allergic rhinitis and asthma. Local enzymatic activity is involved in alterations in airway hyperreactivity through the inducible nitric oxide pathway as well as in collagen synthesis and remodeling through the ornithine pathway. Additionally, arginase is known to be elevated in both psoriatic and chronic wound biopsies. Arginase activity has not been investigated, however, in atopic dermatitis- a condition which has both atopic etiopathology as well as chronic wound characteristics.
