Abstract

The activity of xanthine dehydrogenase in rat liver is depressed by feeding of peroxisome proliferators such as clofibrate and di-(2-ethylhexyl)_phthalate which induce hepatic peroxisomal fatty acid β-oxidation. In this study we examined whether feeding of partially hydrogenated fish oil which is known to induce peroxisomal β-oxidation can also depress the activity of xanthine dehydrogenase and affect serum and urinary uric acid in rats. Feeding the diets containing partially hydrogenated fish oils (20% w/w) for 16 days to the rats depressed xanthine dehydrogenase activity and increased peroxisomal β-oxidation activity in liver as compared with feeding corn oil. Uric acid and allantoin in serum and urine were decreased with feeding partially hydrogenated fish oils.
