Abstract
Incubation of platelet‐rich citrated plasma with polystyrene particles induced surface contact between platelets and particles, uptake of particles, and changes in platelet morphology. EDTA inhibited both the surface contact between platelets and particles and the uptake of particles. Polystyrene particles and thorium dioxide reduced the electrophoretic mobility of human platelets in vitro. Injected into rabbits both types of particles induced reduction in platelet electrophoretic mobility, platelet aggregation and thrombocytopenia. The reduction in platelet surface charge is suggested to render the platelets more susceptible to aggregation and phagocyosis in the reticuloendothelial system.
