Abstract

The modification of polypropylene (PP) by argon ions only is studied by means of a particle beam experiment. The contribution of UV photons from the plasma ion source is blocked by means of a 90° sector field. In situ FTIR measurements shows an etching dynamics governed by surface graphitization. The combined impact of ions and UV photons yields an anti‐synergistic effect on PP etching due to cross‐linking of the hydrocarbon matrix.
