Abstract

Jack-hammering through Los Angeles’s glossy surface-story isn't easy, but for the last three years, Lynn Garrett has worked to do just that. Part old-school news editor and 21st Century content curator, Garrett hosts what is essentially a 24-hour virtual town square, an online space where “netizens” can both explore and discuss the city. Hidden Los Angeles, her wildly dynamic website, (with a corresponding Facebook page – nearly 300,000-members strong) is dedicated to the daily endeavor of “going deeper” – “deep” in a city where people often interpret that the word alone an oxymoron. Since 2009, Garrett has been linking current city-dwellers to expat, multi-generational natives with the casually curious from around the globe and feeding them into conversational threads that explore both place and perception, past, present and future.
