Abstract

The purpose of the study by Michael (1978) is to decompose the rise in the divorce rate for women between 1960 and 1970 into age-specific components, using the data from 15 states in the Divorce Registration Area (DRA). In one of his tables, however, instead of decomposing the rise in the divorce rate as suggested in his table heading and his text, Michael actually decomposed the rise in the level of divorce. This note uses his published tables to decompose the rise in the divorce rate. Let D,,, Ml,l Pi, be the number of divorces, number of married, women, and number of women respectively in the ith group in year t.
