Abstract

Summary The decomposition of vanillic, veratric and benzylvanillic acid by submerged cultures of Fusarium oxysporum 27 was studied. Using vanillic acid specifically 14C-labelled either in the methoxyl, the carboxyl or the aromatic ring, it was shown that the release of 14CO2 from the carboxyl and aromatic ring reached a peak more rapidly than the release from the methoxyl-labelled vanillic acid. The evolution of 14CO2 from vanillic, veratric and benzylvanillic acid, especially from the ring-labelled vanillic acid, was strongly inhibited by cellulose at a concentration of 10 g/l.
