Event Abstract Back to Event Decoded Neurofeedback for Extinction of Fear Memory Mitsuo Kawato1* and Ai Koizumi2* 1 ATR Computational Neuroscience Labs, Japan 2 ATR Computational Neuroscience Labs, Japan Combination of fMRI decoding (multi-voxel pattern analysis) and real-time fMRI neurofeedback led to "Decoded Neurofeedback" or DecNef. DecNef was applied to several basic neuroscience problems including visual perceptual learning (Shibata et al. 2011), phenomenal consciousness, facial preference, and confidence in visual discrimination. DecNef was also applied to clinical problems such as obsessive compulsive disorders with preliminary but promising success. Here, we introduce another possible clinical application for post-traumatic stress disorder. DecNef in sensory cortices successfuly suppressed amygdala activity related to fear memory, and also decreased behavioral fear responses (Koizumi, Amano, Cortese, Yoshida, Seymour, Kawato, Lau, unpublished data).
