Abstract
Alpine stream insects are in trouble. This trouble comes from human impacts. The effects of global warming are magnified in alpine regions. Anthropogenic warming has many effects on alpine environments, including shrinkage of glaciers and snowfields, changes in stream habitat characteristics, increased irregularity of alpine streamflow, and changes in alpine stream basins. Glacial shrinkage is causing cascades of effects on alpine ecosystems, many of which contribute to biodiversity loss and disruption of alpine stream food webs. In addition to habitat alteration and loss, alpine stream insects are also being poisoned by pesticides and air pollution carried upslope by winds. High elevation mines in the Andes and elsewhere contaminate alpine waters with toxic waste and heavy metal particles.
