Abstract

Thirty adult preanesthetic interviews were performed, ten with a cathoderay-type input device and 25 with a mark-sense form. An International Business Machines Corporation system 360 model 40 computer with disk files was used. Three representative decisions were calculated: recent upper respiratory tract infection (URI), chronic smoker, and clues to chronic obstructive lung disease. The system should (1) upgrade the level at which allied professional personnel can function, (2) enlarge the role of the outpatient clinic, (3) reduce the length of hospital stay, (4) improve the quality of medical care, (5) reduce hospital costs, (6) improve the utilization of hospital beds and operating rooms, and (7) provide a tool for epidemiologic investigation of problems relating to anesthesiology.
