Abstract

Micro(nano)plastics pollution has become a significant and unavoidable issue, and research on the toxicity of micro(nano)plastics is experiencing an explosive trend. We comprehensively retrieved all articles (total 2506) on the toxicity of micro(nano)plastics in the Web of Science Core Collection from the initiation of the concept of micro(nano)plastics to the present. Through bibliometric analysis, we conducted a thorough statistical analysis of global research on the toxicity of micro(nano)plastics, further exploring the directions, distribution, and hotspots of micro(nano)plastic toxicity research. The results of the analysis indicate a strong regional distribution pattern in micro(nano)plastic toxicity research. Researchers engaged in micro(nano)plastic toxicity research also exhibit a notable tendency for collaborative group work. Additionally, the primary focus of micro(nano)plastic toxicity research lies in the distribution of micro(nano)plastics and their ecological impact on the environment. Researchers show a greater concern for the harm of micro(nano)plastics to aquatic organisms, with the main emphasis on the toxic mechanisms of micro(nano)plastics centered around the oxidative stress reactions they induce. In conclusion, the field of microplastic toxicity research is exhibiting an explosive trend, and future investigations should focus more on the combined toxicity of microplastics with other pollutants, as well as elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying the toxicity of microplastics. Undoubtedly, our analysis highlights the characteristics of micro(nano)plastic toxicity research, providing valuable insights for researchers undertaking future studies in this field.
