Abstract

The oscillatory motion of a mass on a spiral (nonhelical) spring is shown to have a closed-form solution in terms of Bessel functions of order 2/3. The lowest eigenfrequency and the associated effective spring mass are calculated for a range of values of the attached mass. Analytic and numerical comparisons are made to the helical spring problem.
