Abstract

The collection of municipal refuse is more expensive than refuse disposal. Most collection systems use packer trucks dispatched from one garage and since the collection vehicles usually service widely scattered districts, much unproductive time is spent traveling to and from the garage location. One possibility for maximizing productive time, and thereby minimizing costs of collection, is to decentralize the location of garage facilities. The decentralization of these facilities is formulated as a fixed charge problem that is solved by use of an adjacent, extreme-point algorithm.
