Abstract

PRODYN is a real time method for finding the optimal settings on an urban network. Its basic characteristic is the use of dynamic programming for intersection optimization. In that paper, we investigate and compare two main directions for the control of a network: hierarchical control and decentralized control. Hierarchical control gives the best gains but computations are complex, transmissions between intersections controllers heavy and network size limited to about ten intersections. Decentralized control alleviates these limitations. Furthermore, one of the decentralized methods give as good results as in the hierarchical approach. Thus decentralization approach is of great interest for the future of real time traffic control.
