Abstract

Critical care nurses play an important role in the identification of potential organ donors. Nurses must continue to provide excellent care to all patients, including those experiencing brain death or imminent death. This article covers the assessment criteria nurses must use to refer a patient to the organ procurement organization. The article also discusses the significance of empathy and cultural competency in conversations with a patient's family.
