Abstract
The decay of levels in the 5 d configuration of neutral xenon following pulsed-discharge excitation has been investigated. Techniques for recording time-dependent information in the near infra-red are briefly described. The observed decay times, with one exception, are in the microsecond region, in good agreement with previous theoretical calculations. The long lifetimes of the 5 d levels contribute significantly to the very high gain of laser transitions originating from them.
