Abstract

The decay of a 26 ns isomeric state at 68 keV in 159Gd populated in the reaction 158Gd(d, p) 159Gd has been investigated by delayed coincidence techniques. The most likely Nilsson assignment is 5 2 +|642| . The decay proceeds by K-allowed, twice n z -forbidden E1 transitions to the 3 2 −|521| ground and first rotational states, respectively. The transition to the ground state has a Nilsson hindrance factor of 41, and the branching ratio of the E1 transitions deviates strongly from the prediction based on the Alaga rule.
