The aim of the present article is rather to trace the development and extent of Debussy's unfinished score for La Chute de la Maison Usher, relating it to the three known versions of the libretto, and bringing into perspective material recently made available for study from the Paris collection of Mme. Gaston (Dolly) de Tinan, Debussy's step-daughter. Various items from this treasure trove were tantalizingly put on view at the Bibliotheque Nationale Centenary Exhibition in 1962, but it was only the founding of the Centre de Documentation Claude Debussy in Saint-Germain-en-Laye in February, 1973, and the untiring efforts of its devoted American animatrice, Mrs. Gallatin Cobb, that persuaded Mme. de Tinan to allow photocopies to be made of her precious manuscripts, which were finally placed in the Centre in October, 1974.2 The de Tinan collection consists mostly of manuscripts presented by Debussy to his wife Emma (Mme. de Tinan's mother) during the war years 1915-17, but the main single item is the first known com-
