Abstract
Key points Many academic journals are discontinued; however, there is little discussion of this. Based on one specific case, this essay shows how changes in the systems of evaluation and funding science impact a journal. A lack of quality submissions and of publishers' will to support and/or pay a journal can lead to its discontinuation.
