WAS GIVEN the exact title of this discussion by the planning committee. must say that found the word within the title interesting, to say the least. Resisting the urge to begin my discussion on dealing with tenured faculty by saying carefully, very carefully, will instead merely say that am using the word in the sense of how one handles oneself or copes with others. Tenure, as we all very well know, is a status granted after a trial period that protects an individual from being dismissed without a specific cause, which is always serious and carefully identified in the faculty code of the institution. am certain that not one of us would disagree with the statement that the most important and far-reaching decision we make as deans is to recommend persons for tenure. As a sobering thought, would remind you that those promoted to tenure in 1984 may well be still occupying their faculty positions in 2025 or even later. For those of you in private institutions, bear in mind that a large portion of the salaries of those given tenure this year will come from the tuition of students not yet born.
