Abstract

A number of hypnotic imagery techniques have been demonstrated to be effective in dealing with pain. Even surgery has been performed using hypnosis as the sole anesthesia. The effectiveness of hypnosis in pain control is due to the high level of motivation to overcome pain (Hilgard & Hilgard, 1975). Yet, many individuals are unable to cope with pain even when using hypnosis. The purpose of this paper is to explore why some people are unable to benefit from hypnotic techniques in dealing with pain.
