Abstract

Demographic studies and educational research document that deaf readers encounter world knowledge, linguistic and metacognitive difficulties as they learn to read and read to learn at the interpretive level of understanding. The author advocates a collaborative "externally guided thinking" approach to instruction that helps deaf literal readers learn to read at the evaluative level.
