Abstract

The excitation of Hg vapour/N 2 mixtures by a black-body flash was shown to produce N 2A 3Σ + u by double pumping. The decay of Hg(6 3P 0) following the flash therefore is not characteristic of the deactivation rate, since Hg(6 3P 0) is still produced after the flash by energy transfer from N 2A 3Σ + u. It is claimed that excitation of Hg vapour/N 2 mixtures with a new flash device was effectively uncomplicated; the derived cross-sections for deactivation of Hg(6 3P 0) were found to be much greater than previous estimates with the standard flash technique.
