Abstract
New wood-based materials: context and examples In the framework of sustainable development, wood increasingly establishes itself as an environment- friendly material and progressively becomes more anchored in the French industrials scene. A number of still inconspicuous inventions come out the laboratories and find commercial applications. The latter enjoy a strong political support and find favourable welcoming from the mass market, as they are seen as environment-friendly alternatives to classical synthetic products derived from the petrochemical industry, or whose production requires high energy expenditures. After a short introduction dealing with wood as a source of new materials and products, a few examples of innovations will be given in this paper. Structural materials, followed by functional materials, will be considered in the light of recent works carried out in French laboratories.
