Abstract

The lists of words were the third stage of the study of rudiments ; the children had to copy and learn by heart lists of words grouped according to the syllable number. From the Roman period onwards, the words were presented in alphabetical order. A great many two-syllabled words were names of gods and heroes. Then, there were names of kings, generals, towns, rivers and authors, which the teacher used for teaching his pupils history, geography, and literary history. There were also thematic and alphabetic lists. All these were an important stage in the learning of reading and were likely to give the children a good general education. Such lists had the same importance in Sumer and in Egypt.
