Abstract

The present paper examines the work of composition carried out by Giovanni Verga in the elaboration of his last short story cycle, Don Candeloro e C.i. (1894). By comparing the various stages of publication of the texts, one on periodical, the other in the original edition, and by confronting Italian, Anglo-Saxon and French theoretical traditions on the matter, the analysis aims to analyse and to identify the new dynamic established between the short stories once they are united in a single volume. The results of this analysis make it possible, on the one hand, to interrogate to a larger extent the specificities of the form "short story cycle" and, on the other hand, to identify the novelty and the poetic importance of the Don Candeloro e C.i. in the Sicilian author's production
