Abstract

This paper examines the evolution of the terminology of verb complements in official texts published in France from 1910 to the present day: first through the analysis of the debates and discussions that accompanied the elaboration of the first official grammatical nomenclature, then by the study of the short and medium term reception of this inaugural text, and finally by the comparison of official nomenclatures and terminologies published from 1975 onwards. This evolution highlights contrary trends in language teaching and reveals the difficulties in articulating the levels of syntactic and semantic analysis.
