Abstract

Even though Wixarika people are often characterized as «pagan», Christianity is an important aspect of their religious practice. In this paper indigenous stories about Christ and the saints, as well as certain Catholic ceremonies, like Holy Week, are explained as related to how Wixarika people engage with non-Indigenous populations, modern technology and capitalist economy. In no way there is a rejection of any of those. However, for the communities it is a priority to maintain autonomy, so the control of the uncanny powers of otherness is a crucial, but impossible aspect of Wixarika Christianity.
