Abstract

This chapter deals with the special state of angels. The name 'angels' is peculiar to Holy Scripture and signifies spiritual creatures which subsist on their own, are equipped with intellect and a free will, and have exceptional power and ability to perform tasks suitable to their nature outside of themselves, being more powerful than other creatures. For Holy Scripture, which everywhere describes the duties of the angels most fully to one, makes no mention of this matter, but to the contrary places the angels' dwelling-place in the highest heaven or Paradise, and asserts that they all are being sent for the salvation of believers. Both good and bad angels are able to influence the external and internal senses of men in amazing ways, as when they struck the eyes of the men of Sodom with blindness. Keywords: bad angel; good angel; Holy Scripture; Paradise; salvation; Sodom
