Abstract
An ammonite fauna is reported for the first time from the intra-oceanic carbonate platform of central Italy (Maiella Massif, southern Apennines). This fauna gives evidence for an early Middle Albian age ( Hoplites dentatus Zone, Lyelliceras lyelli Subzone) of the top of the Lower Cretaceous limestone series. Consequently the emersion in the northeastern part of the Latium-Abruzzi platform typified by a bauxitic karst occurred between the Middle Albian and the Middle Cenomanian. The ammonite faunal assemblage is dominated by cosmopolitan ubiquitous forms such as Lyelliceratinae and Mojsisovicsiinae without neritic forms such as Engonoceratidae; this appears to be in agreement with the palaeogeographical position of the Maiella Massif, located in the middle part of the western Tethyan ocean during the Early Cretaceous.
