Abstract

Rheumatologists will often discover a monoclonal gammopathy during survey of osteoporosis and especially in elderly patients. Probability that the diagnosis of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is held is much higher that of multiple myeloma and knowledge of features justifying a medullary assessment is fundamental. Even if pathophysiology of early bone loss associated with MGUS is not clearly explained, increase of fractures, especially vertebral fractures, is well established and prevalence of osteoporosis according to dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is higher in patients with MGUS compared to controls.
