Abstract

In view of the DC fault current clearance deficiency for the conventional HVDC topologies, such as half-bridge sub-module (HBSM) based modular multilevel converter (MMC), this paper proposes a new CSC topology for HVDC application, which can not only suppress the rise of DC fault current, but also has a better direct current (DC) line faults detection based on boundary protection principle and non-unit electrical transients. It utilizes only the DC current signal by means of the high frequency component resulted from stationary wavelet transform (SWT) to identify the DC line faults. Furthermore, the distinction method of different kind of DC faults by applying transient voltage changes is proposed. The proposed method does not depend on commutation and would action more quickly.
