Abstract

Dazu Rock Carvings, located in Dazu County of the Chongqing Municipality, include Cliff side Statues associated with five mountains: Beishan, Baoding, Nanshan, Shizhuan, and Shimen. Originating during the reign of Tang Gaozong (650-655 AD), an emperor in the early Tang Dynasty, the carving of the statues reached its golden age during the late Tang Dynasty, the Five Dynasties, the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties (the 9th to the 13th century), and continued into the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Cliffside Statues, most of which were created on cliffs made of Mesozoic and Triassic sandstones, are hidden in the green mountains covered by thick vegetation.
