For the Day of Immunology 2009, a competition was launched to honour the best projects around the world 3. It was essential that the projects facilitated communication between researchers and the public and, most importantly, that the communication was at a level that could be understood by all, including those without a scientific background. The projects and winners of the four prizes were: First Prize (€2000) Primary Immunodeficiency Foundation Colombia; Claudia Milena Trujillo Vargas Project: a cartoon/movie “Our Battles” Second Prize (€1000) The Portuguese Society of Immunology; Margarida Carneiro Project: a booklet for laypeople Third Prize (€500) Immunology Montréal, Canada; Marianna Newkirk Project: educational (board) games Fourth Prize The Austrian Society of Allergologists and Immunologists; Marcus Saemann Project: a radio spot In addition to the monetary award, all winners were invited to present their winning projects at ECI Berlin 2009 during the EFIS session and each winner also received a 1-year print subscription to either Nature Immunology, Immunity, European Journal of Immunology (EJI) or Immunology Letters. The journals were selected by raffle at the award ceremony and the EJI team were thrilled when the first prize winner also won the EJI subscription at the raffle. In this issue's News and EFIS, two of the winners describe their involvement in the public communication of science and their award-winning projects. The EJI team hope this inspires readers to get involved in 2010's Day of Immunology, the details of which will follow in a later EJI issue and on the Day of Immunology website (http://dayofimmunology.org/).
